Where does the team practice?
We practice at Salt Lake City Sports Complex, located near the University of Utah campus.
How often do you practice?
We hold four team practices per week. Practices before performances and competitions are mandatory for performing and competing skaters. Team members are also encouraged to skate on their own during freestyle or public sessions. Most skaters skate 2–5 times per week depending on their level. If you have questions about practice times, please email us or visit our Contact Information page.
Are there skill or level requirements to join?
All University of Utah students are welcome to join, regardless of skating level — from beginners to advanced skaters. No prior experience is required, though basic skating skills are recommended for participation in team practices.
Members must maintain good academic standing with the University of Utah and be enrolled in at least one credit hour per semester. Skaters are expected to attend practices regularly, participate in team events, and uphold a positive and supportive team environment.
Each program (Recreational, Performance, and Competition) has its own specific requirements and expectations. For more information, please email our team Secretary & Safety Officer or refer to our Contact Information page.
Do I need my own skates to join?
For recreational skaters, rental skates may be available. However, competition and performance skaters are required to have their own skates for all practices, performances, and competitions.
How much does it cost to be on the team?
Team dues vary each year and depend on the program you participate in. Skaters are responsible for covering costs such as U.S. Figure Skating membership (if competing), competition entry fees, team apparel, travel expenses, ice time, etc.
If you would like more detailed information about current dues or payment breakdowns, please email us — your message will be directed to our team Treasurer.
What is performance team?
Our performance team is made up of skaters who perform in exhibitions, shows, and community events throughout the season. Members may be selected based on interest, availability, and performance readiness. Anyone is welcome to join as long as they have basic skating skills. It’s a great opportunity for skaters who enjoy performing but may not wish to compete.
Can I be on both the competitive and performance teams?
Yes! Many of our members participate in both. Competitive skaters often join the performance team to gain additional experience and represent the University of Utah at local events.
Do I have to compete?
No! We welcome all skaters — whether you’re looking to compete, learn, or just stay involved in the skating community.
What are competitions like?
Competitions are a highlight of the season! The team travels together, stays overnight, cheers for each other, etc. and represents the University of Utah at Intercollegiate Pacific Sectional events.
What is intercollegiate figure skating?
Intercollegiate skating is a U.S. Figure Skating program where collegiate athletes compete for their universities in events such as Short Program, Freeskate, Solo Pattern Dance, Solo Free Dance, Team Maneuvers, etc.
